Kam’s Story
Physical strength has always had various meanings for me; feeling good, being fitter, having more energy, and sleeping better. However, my fitness journey has been a rollercoaster of challenges. For years, I struggled to make strength training a consistent part of my life, constantly facing setbacks due to life’s demands raising kids, work, health issues, and more. Exercise often felt like two steps forward and ten steps back.
As a psychotherapist, I see how often we put others first, neglecting our basic needs like sleep, nutrition, and exercise. It’s essential to prioritise these basics, yet so many of us struggle to maintain them.
The past two years have been different for me. Working with Harry at The Movement Barn has helped me slowly build my strength, navigate a serious breathing illness, and, most importantly, feel supported in a safe, compassionate environment. Harry’s knowledge, support, and occasional nagging have motivated me to keep pushing forward.
Recently, I achieved a personal best on bench press. It wasn’t Olympic-level, but it was a milestone in my 54 years of life I’ve never felt so strong. The experience was emotional, bringing a sense of accomplishment mixed with the wish that I had found this strength earlier in life.
While I can’t change the past, I’m now focused on getting stronger, facing new challenges, and embracing the future.
