Mike’s Story
When I joined The Movement Barn, my main motivation was simple: I wanted to stop getting injured.
I compete in local badminton leagues, and over the years I’d picked up a frustrating number of niggles and injuries. Alongside that, I wanted to improve my overall strength and fitness so my body could better support the sport I enjoy.
My Goals at the Start
At the beginning, my goals were fairly modest:
Reduce the number of niggles and injuries
Improve my general fitness
See progress in what I could do during workouts
I wasn’t chasing anything extreme — I just wanted to feel better and more capable.
Results I’ve Noticed Since Starting
The biggest win by far is that I haven’t been injured since I started training at TMB.
Alongside that, my general fitness and strength have improved significantly, and I’ve rediscovered my enthusiasm for sport — something that had been fading after years of dealing with injuries.
Personal Progress and Wins
I’ve managed to do exercises I would never have thought possible before, and I’ve seen small but consistent improvements across almost all of the movements we work on each week.
Those steady gains have been incredibly motivating.
Challenges at the Beginning
Having never been to a gym before, I didn’t really know how to do most things. But the team at TMB have been friendly, patient, and knowledgeable throughout my journey, which made a huge difference.
Another challenge for me is that I’m very competitive with myself. I’ve had to learn not to be too hard on myself if one week doesn’t feel as strong as the last, and to remember that the aim is long-term improvement rather than how I perform on any single day.
Day-to-Day Changes
Training consistently has led to:
A better mood
Improved stress management
Enjoying badminton again, thanks to staying injury-free
Those changes alone have made the process more than worthwhile.
My Advice to Anyone Starting Out
Just give it a go and take it at your own pace. There really is no downside.
Why The Movement Barn Works
The environment at TMB is incredibly encouraging. The instructors do a fantastic job of pushing you just enough so you give your best without taking things too far, and they’re always happy to tweak workouts when needed.
I also love that every session is pre-planned. You simply turn up and get straight into it, which removes the mental barrier of having to plan your own workout.
What I’m Working Towards Now
My main goal is to stay injury-free, but beyond that I just want to keep improving and maintain the positive momentum I’ve built since starting at TMB.
Final Thoughts
A huge thank you to the team at The Movement Barn for making every workout enjoyable and something I genuinely look forward to rather than a chore.
The wider community deserves a mention too — everyone is so welcoming and friendly that even with no gym experience, it never feels daunting. Everyone just wants to see each other enjoy the process and achieve whatever they’re aiming for
